Fleshly Living

Galatians 5:16 NIV "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh".

I had fresh revelation recently about what living according to the flesh really was like. It's quite animalistic. Our flesh wants and acts much like a wild animal, seeking after whatever it wants. It sees a threat, it runs or fights. Someone challenges them, they fight back with vengeance to protect their own honor. They want anything that gives them pleasure, they seek it. In essence animals are very self-centered and driven by their flesh. Even the ones that operate in a pack are in a pack for their own survival or status. Just like humans that live by the flesh, some tame down their desires and behaviors better than others but we've all seen (or heard of) the quite tame person that eventually snaps.

More and more I'm hearing Christians and non-christians alike commenting on how fast the world is changing lately, for the worse. During the pandemic many of my friends across the country have reported that impatient and aggressive driving, crime, violence and drug use have all increased in an obvious way. I can't help but stop and notice that it's people, including us as followers of Christ aligning and serving our own flesh in moments of pressure and stress. We as Christians need to do better to notice when the spirit of fear, violence, strife, etc are in operation so we can stop and pray for the Lord's direction and for those involved. We also need to pray so we don't respond to our fleshly reaction to those spiritual forces in operation around us.

Can you think of a time lately when you noticed a fleshly behavior spread before your eyes?

I challenge us all to look for these instances as opportunities to pray and seek the Lord's guidance. Who knows what miracles may happen if we chose to follow Him during these moments.
